About Qualified Listeners

We are a nonprofit that helps Veterans and families find more peace in their life. Since 2017, we have provided a variety of direct services including peer-to-peer listening, transportation and direct Veteran assistance. Our staff and volunteers care deeply about our mission and our work that makes deep impacts on the lives of Veterans and their families.

About the Assignment

To provide compassionate, non-judgmental listening and emotional support to veterans, helping them feel heard, valued, and connected to their community.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible; typically, 2–4 hours per week depending on program needs.
  • Minimum 3-month commitment preferred to ensure continuity for veterans.

Volunteer Job Description:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy and patience.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Prior experience with veterans or peer support is helpful but not required.
  • Willingness to attend training sessions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Active Listening: Offer a safe space for veterans to share their experiences without judgment.
  • Emotional Support: Provide empathy, encouragement, and validation.
  • Resource Connection: Share information about veteran services and community resources when appropriate.
  • Boundaries: Maintain confidentiality and respect professional limits (listeners are not therapists).
  • Safety Awareness: Recognize signs of distress and refer veterans to crisis hotlines or professionals when needed.
  • Consistency: Commit to regular listening sessions (in-person, phone, or virtual).
  • Training & Growth: Participate in orientation and ongoing training in active listening and veteran culture.
